Jana Porter is an Assistant Professor of Reference and Instructional Design at the Bronx Community College (BCC) Library. She is an idea-person who enjoys creating interactive learning experiences, utilizing technology, and helping people access information. During 2025 she began a quest to teach AI Literacy skills to students at BCC and in SP26 piloted her BCC Student AI Micro-Course. She has presented at several CUNY-related conferences on her efforts as well as presented on her AI Micro-Course at the American Library Association’s 150th Annual Conference in Chicago, June 2026. For FY27 she is leading a grant team to create a Scenario-Based AI Literacy tutorial “AI on Campus” that she hopes will be utilized by all new BCC students. Also, in FY27 she is one of the six BCC team members participating in the AAC&U’s AI, Pedagogy, and Curriculum Institute to achieve better communication and integration of AI at BCC.

At BCC she serves as an AI Faculty mentor and a member of the campus’ Ad hoc AI policy initiative. She is also involved with several AI and Instructional Design groups and roundtables within the CUNYverse. Her approach to AI Literacy is pragmatic and focused on ethics and minimizing the risks associated with using this technology. When not implementing AI Literacy at BCC she enjoys exploring New York City, performing music, and contemplative practices. - August 2026
